Earth Pressure Theories Pdf Notes by Kaisar Farooq
Asalamu Aliekum friends, In this article I am going to share the Hand-Written Notes of Earth Pressure Theories. It is one of the most important unit of Geotechnical Engineering. Its concept is used in Bearing Capacity and in Pile Foundation. So students need to study this unit very well so that they does not face any problem in other units.
Earth Pressure |
Topics Covered
- Definition: The pressure that soil exerts in the horizontal direction is called Lateral Earth Pressure.
- Retaining Structure: A structure which is used to hold back or retain a soil mass is called retaining structure. e,g sheet piles.
- Earth Pressure at Rest: In this case, soil mass is not subjected to any lateral movement and there are no deformations.
- Active Earth Pressure: In this case, soil mass tends to stretch horizontally. It is less than Earth Pressure at Rest.
- Passive Earth Pressure : In this case, soil tends to compress horizontally. It is the greatest among all the earth pressures.
- Rankine's Earth Pressure Theory: It is aplicable for Earth Pressure Analysis of Cohesionless soils. It is based on certain assumptions.
- Earth Presssure Analysis of Cohesive Soils: Cohesive Soils are partially self-supporting. Hence, their analysis is different from Cohesionless Soils.
