These notes will be very helpful for Semester exams as well as GATE and other Competitive Exams. In these notes, I have covered theory only.Numericals may be there, but they are very less in number. So you should try numericals from the Book prescribed in your syllabus or MADE EASY STUDY PACKAGE.

TOPICS COVERED
  • Accident Study: One of the main objective of Traffic Engineering is to provide safe traffic movements. Road Accidents can be reduced by suitable traffic engineering measures.
  • Traffic Signals: Traffic Signal is a device which is used to direct traffic to stop and proceed at intersections using Red and Green traffic lights.
  • Elements in Traffic Signals: Elements used in design of traffic signals are: Cycle Length, Change Interval, Clearance Interval, Phase, Lost Time.
  • Design of Traffic Signals: It is mainly done by 2 methods.
  • Trial Cycle Method: In this method, Green Time is calculated on the basis of number of vehicles per hour accumulated at intersection.
  • Webester Method: This method depends upon the normal flow, saturation flow and lost time.
  • Parking Study: Parking is one of the major problems created by day-to-day increase in road traffic. It has great economical impact.
  • On-Street Parking: In this type of parking, vehicles are parked on the kerb which is designed for parking.
  • Off-Street Parking: In this type of parking, some areas are allotted for parking which are at some distance from main road.
  • Delay & Queue Analysis of Signalised Intersection: It is used to calculate average delay.
  • Peak Hour Factor: It is the ratio of hourly volume to  the maximum rate of flow. It's value ranges from 0.25 to 1.0
